“Gallows Corner” and “Gallows Pine” in Jaunaglona

Apraksts

Beyond the Jaunaglona HPP, on a peninsula on the shore of Lake Rušona, is a place locally known as "Gallows Corner" and “Gallows Pine”. Here, disobedient peasants from Kameņeca and nearby estates were hanged.

Peasants from near and far took part in the 1905 Revolution and in the destruction of the manors around Aglona.

The local nobleman, Reuts, punished the so-called "forest thieves”, peasants who, during the 1905 uprisings, seized the opportunity to cut down trees in the landlord’s forest without permission. As a punishment, the nobleman Reuts called the dragoons (punishment unit) from Rezekne, who hanged the so-called "forest thieves" or protesters on a pine tree by the Lake Rušona. Their bodies reportedly hung there for some time before relatives retrieved and buried them. With the arrival of the "Soviet times", as they were commonly known, the "forest thieves" were rebranded as heroes - revolutionaries who protested against the rule of the nobility at that time. A memorial stone was built in their honour on the site of the gallows, on which it is written that it is a tribute to the revolutionaries of 1905.

However, according to legend, this was the place of punishment for the participants in the 1905 peasant uprisings.
The original pine tree is no longer there, as it was allegedly cut down, but a new tree has since grown to mark the spot. A memorial stone stands next to the pine tree.
