Cemetery of Jewish citizens of Preiļi

Apraksts

The Preiļi Jewish cemetery is located on the outskirts of the town. The oldest known burial dates back to 1833. The Hebrew inscription on the tombstones reads 'Here is buried Menahem Man ben Abraham Abba. Died 24.11.1833. Our rabbi and teacher. Son of Abraham Abba." The last person buried in the Jewish cemetery in Preiļi was in 1964.

In 2013/2014, representatives of the German association L.O.T., together with the Preiļi Museum of History and Applied Arts and Preiļi schoolchildren, cleaned the cemetery. All the tombstones were documented, and their inscriptions were translated.
In 2015, with the funding from Preiļi Municipality Honorary Citizen Dāvids Zilbermanis and Bella Zilbermane, a memorial arch dedicated to the Jewish community of Preiļi was unveiled. The architect, Sergejs Rižs, designed the arch to resemble the Jewish prayer shawl tallit, on which the traditional Jewish tombstone inscription "May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life" is written in various languages. The gateway is also shaped to resemble a menorah, symbolizing light, renewal, and life.
