Moskvinas Old Believers Prayer House

The Old Believers community in Moskva has been known since the end of the 17th century, when guardians of the ancient faith, who fled their homelands during the great schism of the Russian Orthodox Church, found refuge in the Borha region. The current house of prayer, dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God and St. Nicholas, was built in 1877. Until 1940, the congregation was one of the largest rural communities in Latgale, with more than 2,000 believers. Many spiritual fathers came from the Moskvin congregation.  There were always educated and strong singers here, who were invited to serve at the Grebeshchikova Church in Riga.

The bell tower of the Moskvin prayer house has a bell with an amazing history. Well-known Russian people got married to its sounds, including Pavel Tretyakov, founder of the Moscow Art Gallery, and patron Savva Mamontov with their brides.
